As instrumental skills progress, development in music theory and musicianship becomes increasingly important in helping students to perform with sensitivity, understanding, and confidence.
ABRSM’s Music Theory exams aim to give students a thorough understanding of the building blocks of music, starting with the basics of rhythm and notes and going on to cover harmony and counterpoint, composition, and broad knowledge of Western music, including composers and their works, structure, style and period.
A longstanding ABRSM benchmark is that a pass at Grade 5 or above in Music Theory must be obtained before candidates can enter for Grades 6, 7, or 8 Practical exams. We believe that a thorough understanding of the elements of music is essential for full and satisfying performance at these higher grades. (Grade 5 or above in Practical Musicianship or any solo Jazz subject also fulfills this prerequisite.)
Theory course duration:
First semester (August-December)
Second semester (January- June)
The theory course lasts by semester following our calendar.
New students
We have ongoing enrolment throughout the year and you can start whenever it suits you. You don’t have to pay for the theory lessons you have missed, it will be deducted from the semester fee at startup.
Theory course consists of:
Individual theory lessons once/twice per week by 30 or 45 minutes.

Payment
We have a convenient payment structure, allowing for two payments per semester; a total of four payments in a year. Our payment structure is quarterly or by semester. The semester fee will be sent to you at the beginning and/or in the middle of the semester.
The semester fee is payable by invoice.

45 minutes individual theory lesson once per week 7760, -per semester (approx. 456 NOK per lesson)*.
30 minutes individual theory lesson twice per week 10060, -per semester (approx. 295 NOK per lesson)*.
